This point is well-made in Julian Simon's awesome book _The Ultimate Resource_. In 1980, Simon bet eco-doomsayer Paul Ehrlich that a basket of any five metals of Ehrlich's choice would by 1990 be cheaper (after inflation) than in 1980.
